FAIRFIELD — Cannabis business owners in Fairfield would be charged what amounts to a 6% sales tax on gross receipts for retail operations, and business taxes on the type of business and square footage of their operations if voters pass Measure C in November.

The ballot measure reads:

“Shall the ordinance imposing a cannabis business tax be adopted with the city taxing cannabis or hemp businesses at annual rates not to exceed $10 per canopy square foot for cultivation (adjustable for inflation), 6% of gross receipts for retail cannabis businesses, and 4% for all other cannabis businesses which is expected to generate an estimated $237,500 to $360,000 annually and will be levied until repealed by the voters or the City Council?”

Vacaville voters will decide on a similar initiative, Measure V, with the same tax assessments.

With hope in their hearts and signs in their hands, an estimated 50 members of Fairfield’s faith community joined Saturday for a prayer walk slated to shed light on racial inequality and injustice.

The marchers, of all ages and ethnicities and faith, set out from Allan Witt Park and strolled the sidewalks straight up West Texas Street toward the Old Solano County Courthouse, with Fairfield police escorts ensuring their safety.

After weeks of unrest following the deaths of Breonna Taylor in Kentucky and George Floyd in Minnesota, there was a need for another way to voice anger and hurt, advised Dr.William L. Harris IV, pastor of Praise Covenant Church in Fairfield.

Youth members, particularly, reached out to him for direction, he said, and the prayer walk was born.
