SUISUN CITY — Suisun City resident Felicia Salinas said the sign in her front yard is “simple and to the point.”
The wife, mother and nearly retired medical field worker said the Food is Free sign attached to the 5-foot-wide and 4-foot-tall pantry installed to offer free groceries, reads, “Take what you need, leave what you can. Above all be blessed.”
Salinas is just one of a rapidly growing number of locals who are jumping on the Food is Free Solano bandwagon, which was launched just weeks ago by Benicia resident Heather Pierini.
“There are 28 stands throughout the county including Benicia, Fairfield, Vallejo, Suisun, Vacaville and (Napa County’s) American Canyon,” Pierini said. “And we have connected with more than 100 agencies and organizations who have expressed interest in or have come and picked up food for distribution from us. We hit a million servings of produce – 238,000 pounds – on (July 20) – about 25 days since we started.”
