Solano board supports federal workweek standard for sheep, goat herders

FAIRFIELD — The Solano County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution Tuesday supporting the federal 48-hour workweek standard for sheep and goat herders.

The unanimous vote was part of the board’s consent agenda and was brought to the supervisors for consideration by Chairman John Vasquez, a supporter of Superior Farms, the largest lamb processing facility on the West Coast. There were no comments.

It pushes back against an agriculture overtime law signed by then-Gov. Jerry Brown in 2016, and will reduce the pay of herders by as much as 50%. That increase, advocates of using the federal standard claim, was an unintended result of the law.
