Children get history, nature lessons at Camp Adobe

Summer is generally considered a time for horsing around, but kids at Camp Adobe took that phrase a bit more literally Wednesday.

On the grounds of Pena Adobe Park, campers got to pet miniature horses, practice wrangling on cattle dummies and learn about all the tools cowboys had to use when saddling up in the 19th century.

The Pena Adobe Historical Society is in the midst of Camp Adobe, an annual multiweek camp that brings kids into the outdoors and allows them to do daily hikes, activities and receive lessons from the program’s docents. The camp is held on the premises of the Pena Adobe, the oldest structure built in Solano County and the home of the Pena family. The settlers had migrated with the Vaca family from the New Mexico region to the area that later became Vacaville and erected an adobe there in 1842.
