VACAVILLE, Calif. — Phyllis Mitchum, 57, had a steady job for nearly 20 years until the coronavirus pandemic forced her employer to furlough workers.

The senior service technician filed for unemployment in May after her company, a subsidiary of Xerox, furloughed her for an indefinite period of time.

Since then, she has received the maximum benefits available through unemployment which is $1,050 per week, or $4,200 per month. Californians who qualify for unemployment may receive up to $450 per week through the state program.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a change in the rules for hair salons and other beauty services in a Monday press conference on the coronavirus pandemic.

While hair salons, barbershops, nail salons, massage parlors and other beauty services have to close indoor operations in counties on the state’s watch list, they’re now allowed to move some services outdoors.

The guidelines for outdoor hair salons and barbershops include:

    • Employees and customers have to wear masks the entire time
    • Create an outdoor reception area where guests can check in
    • No handshakes, hugs or similar greetings
