In 1967, Carol Yount had finished her studies at Napa College and was looking for her first full-time job as she neared the age of 20. After applying to a few different places, she saw an ad on the front page of The Reporter listing an open position for a secretary at the Nut Tree.
Yount, who moved to Vacaville in 1954 and graduated from Vacaville High School in 1965, had visited the iconic restaurant and roadside stop with her family before and jumped at the opportunity.
“I loved the Nut Tree,” she said.
That same summer, Yount was offered a position in the steno pool at California Medical Facility but was told by an employee that she would be dealing with very disconcerting stories regarding the inmates. When she interviewed for the Nut Tree position, it was conducted by managing partner Mary Helen Fairchild near the rocking horses amid a very colorful backdrop.
