FAIRFIELD — New state laws require by 2025 that 20% of edible foods that would otherwise be sent to landfills be recovered to help feed those in need instead.
The Fairfield City Council on Tuesday night introduced an ordinance that brings local regulations in line with the state on this and other recycling provisions.
Senate Bill 1383 requires the city to establish an Edible Food Recovery Program for commercial edible food generators, which are categorized under two tiers.
Tier 1 edible food generators include supermarkets and grocery stores with a total facility size greater than 10,000 square feet, and food distributors. Local examples of a Tier 1 generator include Costco, Food Maxx or Producers Dairy Foods.
