CITRUS HEIGHTS (CBS13) – On Monday, the San Juan Unified School District is welcoming all students back for the first time since distance learning began more than a year ago.

It’s something that some students and parents like the Oldham family in Citrus Heights were happy to see come to fruition.

“I was really excited to take this chance and go back,” Audrey Oldham, a sophomore at Meraki High School, said.

“It just feels weird to have to reintroduce myself to some people and get to know people again,” Sabrina Oldham, a fifth-grader at Carriage Drive Elementary, said.

A spokesperson for the district said that there have been some students on campus that were there for special education and other types of programs prior to this move. The district is eager and excited to welcome back students again.

At issue is whether to continue with distance learning or return to in-person instruction. The topic has been covered over the past few months at each meeting, but continued changes to the state’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic has caused delays in returning to normal learning structures for students.

Superintendent Kris Corey covered the “Safe Schools for All” plan, which has been proposed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and has not been adopted but is working its way through the Legislature. The plan might be implemented in February, starting with the return of children in elementary school to in-person learning. Children in middle school and teens in high school would return to classrooms in the spring.

About a dozen people gathered outside Vacaville Unified School District headquarters Thursday to rally for a full reopening of the schools instead of the 50/50 plan approved for fall.

The kids need the structure, the socialization and their teachers, supporters said, not being stuck at home trying to learn digitally.
